Do You Know Where You're Going? The EQ Skill of Intentionality

Sue Hurst

Beginning today, you can Stop living on automatic.

Intentionality is a learnable skill you can develop.

You can live deliberately; you can live with purpose.

Okay…you may be reading this and it’s the middle of summer. Or maybe it's the first day of the new year. It doesn't matter when you decide to evaluate the way you're living.

  • Are you living with intentionality? Do you know where you’re going?
  • Do you carefully and periodically review your life to celebrate certain areas while noting those you want to improve?
  • Do you regularly map out everything with your daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly goals on your annual calendar?
Some people are able to say they’ve completed everything listed and more. For others, just reading the preceding paragraph makes them break out in hives.

Have you ever driven home only to realize you have no recollection of the journey? You were definitely driving, maybe not even really thinking about anything, just mindlessly on automatic. Most of us have had that experience but is that a regular occurrence for you? Maybe it’s not just the drive home that’s on automatic. Maybe it’s your life.

The Institute of Social and Emotional Intelligence has listed intentionality as a personal competency or skill that allows someone to think and act with deliberate purpose. So, honestly, do you feel strong in this area?

Fortunately, intentionality is a learnable skill and coaching can help. Coaching offers the accountability and structure that allows you to deliberately pursue the plans you have for your life, your career, for your team at work, for your family.

But you can’t model a skill you don’t possess but you can decide to develop the leadership skill of intentionality.

I saw a bumper sticker that said: “I thought getting older would take longer.” Sadly, there is an abundance of songs and stories telling how quickly time passes.

However, let this be your year—the year you’ve decided to be deliberately present and start really living rather than riding on automatic. Contact me if you'd like a free introductory session. I'd love to listen.
